While originally designed as a replacement for the G-2, the Galeb G-4 was also operated by dedicated fighter-bomber units of the former Yugoslav Air Force. The type proved precious enough that on the dissolution of Yugoslavia only one – serial number 23725 – was left with the V i PVO. In addition to serving as a continuation trainer for J-22 Orao pilots, it also flew combat sorties, frequently armed with US-designed Mk.82 bombs, as shown here. After suffering damage during a liaison flight to Belgrade in June 1992, it was repaired using the rear fuselage and tailfin from the G-4 serial number 23685, resulting in its look as depicted here. Notable is the application of a small No 249 Squadron insignia including a yellow disc and a cobra in black, white and red, low below the front part of the cockpit, the installation of a pod with 23mm GSh-23 gun under the centreline, and chaff and flare dispensers under the lower fuselage.
