| Handley Page Halton (H.P.70 Halton) |
The Handley Page Halton was the civilian version of the Second World War Halifax bomber. Just as with the Lancastrian, the Halton had the gun turrets replaced with aerodynamic fairings. The Halton had a large removable ‘pannier’ in place of the bomb bay, allowing bulk freight to be carried ‘outside’ the airframe. This was ideal for the shipment of bulk salt when ice curtailed RAF Short Sunderland river operations. The Halton was named after RAF Halton, the RAF Apprentice training base in Halton, Buckinghamshire and was operated by BAAS, Bond Air Services, Eagle Aviation, Lancashire Aircraft Corporation, Skyflight, Westminster Airways and World Air Freight. The aircraft shown is Handley Page Halton G-ALEF ‘Red Eagle’ of Eagle Aviation, adding an unusual splash of colour to the airlift. (Artwork by Goran Sudar)
