The Bristol Aeroplane Company Freighter (Bristol 170) first flew in December 1945 and was widely used as a military and civilian transport aircraft. During the airlift, it was deployed to ferry heavy equipment over from the UK, such as bulldozers for airfield construction and fire engines, which could be loaded through a wide clam-shell nose. The aircraft were previously being used to ferry cars across the English Channel. The passenger version of the aircraft, the Wayfarer, was also used in the airlift. The aircraft shown is G-AHJC of the Bristol Aeroplane Company, which was on short term lease to Silver City Airways. (Artwork by Luca Canossa)
