The four-engined Avro York was reaching the end of its service life but gave Operation Plainfare a much-needed heavy lift capability. Derived from the famous Lancaster bomber, it was roughly equivalent to the US C-54 and first flew in 1942. Around 40 Yorks were used in the operation before being replaced by the Handley Page Hastings. Several Yorks were also used by civilian contractors during the airlift. The aircraft shown is Avro 685 York C.1 MW 271 TB-X of 51 Squadron RAF. The crest just below the pilot’s window (and also shown inset) is of RAF Transport Command (A golden griffon in front of a globe). (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
