When put through an overhaul in the final years of the Second World War, this Westland Lysander from No. 3 Squadron, REAF – serial number 504 (ex. Y504) – was thoroughly renewed, including the replacement of most fabric, and repainted in overall silver dope. The only significant difference was that the serial number lost the prefix Y, and that this was not reapplied on any other parts of the airframe or the wing. As with all other Lysanders deployed with the Tactical Air Force at al-Arish, it had the side panels of the wheel spats removed, and the short version of stub wings with bomb racks installed instead. Lysander serial number 504 is known to have flown at least one armed reconnaissance sortie and two offensive bombing sorties in July 1948 and is shown carrying five bombs of three different weights.
