One of perhaps the most under-recognised helicopter types deployed by the Soviets in Afghanistan was the Mil Mi-6. With a rotor diameter of 35 metres, maximum take-off weight of 44,000kg (97,003lbs) and capable of lifting up to 12,000kg (26,455lbs), this heavy-lift transport helicopter was heavily involved in all major operations; hauling troops, ammunition, supplies and lighter vehicles all over the country. Usually operated by a crew of five, it had seating for 65 armed troops. It was not usually armed, but an Afanasev A-12 12.7mm calibre machine gun (with 270 rounds) was often installed in the observer’s cabin, low in the nose. This is a reconstruction of one of the examples photographed early in the Soviet intervention, and probably operated by the 181st Separate Helicopter Regiment in the Kunduz area.
