Airspeed AS.10 Oxford Mk II (serial number PG981) lacked the gunner’s turret of earlier variants but had dual controls and was used as an advanced pilot trainer and a training tool for navigators and radio operators. It was one of three ex-RAF Middle East Command Oxfords acquired by the REAF in 1946 and allocated to No. 4 (Bomb) Squadron – either as a loan or a donation. In turn, the Egyptians donated at least one (possibly a civilian example) to the Syrians, shortly after the end of the Palestine War, in 1949. The paintwork was very worn and the two transparent Perspex panels on the centre fuselage were painted with silver dope, probably to provide some shade for the radio-operator’s position.
