Also known as the Type 97 Heavy Bomber, the Mitsubishi Ki-21 IIB ‘Sally’ was used by the IJAAF for long-range bombing missions. The Gremlin Task Force adopted at least four Sallies: No. 14 (which wore no name), No. 10 (‘F/Lt Lyne Chute’), No. 19 (nick-named ‘Doc’, shown here) and No. 17 (‘Happy’). There is some uncertainty whether they were painted in white or in (strongly bleached) caramel colour overall or on upper surfaces and sides only (if the latter then they might have had their undersurfaces in ‘bare metal’). However, it is certain they wore blue and white South East Asia Command roundels instead of their original Hinomarus. All had their armament removed. The GT I/34 of the Armée de l’Air also briefly used a single ‘Sally’: this was operated from February 1946, but destroyed in a crash already two months later. (Artwork by Jean-Marie Guillou)
