The introduction of the M47 Patton medium tanks in 1952 provided a significant boost to the mechanisation of the Portuguese Cavalry. The first tank squadrons were established at Campo Militar de Santa Margarida while crew training was assigned to the Cavalry Practical School, then based in Torres Novas. In 1974, four M47s were transferred from Santa Margarida to Cavalry Regiment 7 in Lisbon, opposite Salgueiro Maia’s troops in Terreiro do Paço, and ended up joining the revolutionaries. The Patton could reach a top speed of 48km/h and was equipped with a 90mm M36 cannon. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
