In 1970 the Portuguese Army received its first Chaimite, a small armoured personnel transport vehicle with 4x4 traction developed and manufactured in Portugal, although based on the US Cadillac Gage Commando V-100. The Chaimite saw action in Africa as a reconnaissance and troop transport platform, and surviving examples served in the Portuguese Army until 2016. Its use by the Practical Cavalry School from Santarém became well-known, particularly for its involvement in the events of the April revolution in 1974. The deposed head of the overthrown regime, Marcello Caetano, was driven from the Carmo barracks to the rebel troops’ operations centre in Pontinha in a Chaimite vehicle called Bula.
