The Potez 542 was a derivative of the Potez 540, powered by Lorraine 12Hfrs Pétrel V-12 engines, with 720hps. A total of 74 were built, with some exported to Spain. By September 1939, nearly all were transferred to the French colonies in North Africa and Indochina, where they continued serving for transport purposes and paratrooper service. Having poor defensive armament and proving vulnerable to modern fighters, they were all withdrawn from service by late 1943. (Artwork by Jean-Marie Guillou)
