Starting in 1993, Iraq launched the development of numerous small UAVs with tactical range. Work at the Ibn Firnas Centre eventually resulted in the emergence of a wide range of models, all based on commercial components and designated Yamamah 1 through to Yamamah 11. Most were piston engine powered though some used jets. The first to enter production and operational service was Yamamah 2, developed into the Musayara-20, shown to the left. Meanwhile, a more ambitious project, launched in 2000, resulted in the development of the al-Qods UAV, shown to the right, designed for electronic warfare. Al-Qods was about to enter series production when the US-led Coalition invaded in 2003. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
