After upgrading MiG-23MLs, the MIC launched similar works on at least two MiG-29 (9.12B) of No. 6 Squadron (serials 29040 and 29062). Both received additional piping, which made their inboard underwing hardpoints capable of carrying drop tanks. Both could carry TMV-002 Remora ECM pods on the same stations. In turn, large launch rails for R-27R medium range, semi-active radar homing missiles (ASCC/NATO codename ‘AA-10 Alamo’), were moved to the central underwing station. Outboard stations remained occupied by launchers for short-range R-60 air-to-air missiles. Notably, Iraq never received any R-27Ts (the infrared homing variant of the ‘AA-10 Alamo’), nor any R-73s (ASCC/NATO codename ‘AA-11 Archer’). Both 29040 and 29062 survived the war of 1991, but the entire fleet was grounded by 1995 for the lack of resources. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
