The number of R-3S and R-3R missiles still in the stocks of the IrAF as of 1987–1988 was sufficient to adapt several BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles for their carriage. The turret with the gun and machine gun was removed and replaced with a pedestal carrying six launch rails for R-3 missiles. As far as is known, all of the modified missiles had been expended by May 1988, and thus the Iraqis rushed to convert their stocks of even older RS-2U air-to-air missiles to a similar configuration. This project was completed only after the armistice with Iran. (Artworks by David Bocquelet and Tom Cooper)
