| Cardoen CB-500 (Cardoen CB.500) |
The second most-widely deployed fighter-bomber operated by the IrAF was the Sukhoi Su-20/22-family. Starting in 1981, several Su-22Ms were upgraded through compatibility with Kh-28 anti-radiation missiles (AS-9 Kyle; lower right corner), to the standard locally designated Su-22M-2K. Through the 1980s, they were equipped with (inset, from left to right) two variants of the Cardoen CB.500 and South African SCB.470 CBUs; the large and powerful jets of this family could carry six of each at once. Soviet-made SPG-141E ECM pods (centre bottom inset) became available from around 1984 and proved highly effective. Finally, by 1990, at least two Su-22M-4s were modified by the Iraqis through the addition of French-made IFR probes – the main artwork shows the example with serial number 22564; the other known example was 22481 – and adapted to deploy Kh-25MP anti-radiation missiles (ASCC/NATO codename AS-10 Karen; shown installed on the inboard underwing pylon).
