The final two years of the war with Iran and the immediate aftermath saw a large number of foreign arms projects to Iraqi specification being finalised, and at least as many indigenous Iraqi arms projects being launched. One of the former reached Iraq in early 1987, in the form of a Dassault Falcon 50 business jet modified through the installation of the avionics and cockpit of a Mirage F.1EQ-5, and the capability to carry and deploy two AM.39 Exocet anti-ship missiles, as shown in the main image. Originally meant to serve as a training tool, and nicknamed ‘Suzanna’, the jet was used in the strike on the guided-missile frigate USS Stark on 17 May of the same year. By 1989, it had received further modifications, including an additional fuel tank installed inside the cabin, and the capability to carry the Raphael TH reconnaissance pod (shown in the lower right corner). Unsurprisingly, Suzanna was taken extremely seriously by the US Navy, prompting it to fly combat air patrols 24/7 over its aircraft carriers in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Shield in the second half of 1990.
