The MT-55A was a bridge-layer tank based on the chassis of the T-55A main battle tank. A total of 1,278 were constructed by Turčianske Strojárne between 1969 and 1983 for the Czechoslovak People’s Army, and allied forces of the Warsaw Pact. An additional 191 were manufactured for export, of which Iraq purchased eight in the version also known as MT-55KS. Each was equipped with a scissors-type bridge capable of spanning 18 metres and supporting a load of 50 tonnes, designed for easy and quick crossing of anti-tank barriers, like trenches, and other large obstacles. This example is shown in service in 1980, when most Iraqi MT-55s saw deployment during the invasion of Iran. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
