The Mirages initially operated with the Shafrir and captured Soviet R-3S air-to-air missiles. These infrared-guided missiles performed very poorly, but the IAF pilots used their 30mm cannon to good effect given their high proficiency in air combat manoeuvring. Introduction of the much improved Shafrir II in 1969, shown here on 117 Squadron’s 44, along with AIM-9Bs from America, began to shift kill ratios to missiles. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
