A Syrian MiG-21PFM is seen with the rare GP-9 gunpod for a twin-barrel 23mm weapon with 200 rounds. It was poor compensation for the model’s lack of an internal gun as it displaced the centreline drop tank and possessed high drag. Speed is life in air combat and also for such missions as the 29 January 1970 ‘booming’ of Haifa by a SyAAF MiG-21 racing in and back across the border at supersonic speeds. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
