The Soviet Union deployed two fighter brigades to Egypt in early 1970 to firm up the air defences under constant IAF pummelling. They operated the latest MiG-21SMs in Egyptian markings, the pilots in UARAF flight suits. This example, aircraft 8204, is from the 2nd Squadron, 135th Regiment, at Beni Suweif and carries R-3S missiles and a centreline tank. The advantages of the aircraft and high quality of the pilots were expected to answer the demonstrated advantages of the Israeli fighters. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
