In 1969 the Soviets provided Egypt with MiG-21PFMs that brought back a cannon, possessed a better radar and gunsight, and featured a radar warning receiver. It was a step forward, along with better training and growing fighter pilot experience, in more effectively meeting the Israeli interceptors and protecting its ground forces from IAF fighter-bombers. Aircraft 8097 of No. 47 Squadron was flown by Samir Aziz Mikhail when countering Israeli aircraft during the first day of the Operation Boxer strikes, 20 July 1969. He claimed one of the two Mirages shot down. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
