The Foxtrot-class was the NATO reporting name for the Soviet Project 641 class of diesel-electric patrol submarine. A total of 58 were built, of which six to eight Foxtrots operated in the Mediterranean at any given time between 1970–1973. US/NATO intelligence estimated this class operated in the many choke points found in the Mediterranean. The Foxtrot’s performance and armament were comparable to those of most other non-teardrop hull designs built for other navies. However, when not on battery power, its three propellers made it noisier than most Western designed subs. (Artwork by Anderson Subtil)
