The Percival Provost, the RhAF’s basic training aircraft, was also conscripted for counter-insurgency operations. No. 6 Squadron at Thornhill flew a dozen Provost T.52s, which could be armed with two 7.62mm machine guns, four 5in. rockets or two 250lb. bombs. During the 1974 operations over Mozambique, the Provost was mainly used for search-and-rescue following the Trojan shootdowns, although these were critically vulnerable to Strela missiles themselves. It was not until sometime later that they were given a low-visibility infrared-reducing paint scheme. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
