Despite an international arms embargo levied against it, in 1967 Rhodesia managed to buy a dozen Aermacchi AL-60B-2 light utility aircraft, which were assembled on site and given the local designation Trojan AL-60F-5. These aircraft were assigned to the 4th Squadron of the Rhodesian Air Force (RhAF) to carry out Forward Air Control (FAC) and Casualty Evacuation (Casevac) missions. In April 1974, the Rhodesians launched a joint operation with the Portuguese, Operation ‘Marble,’ in the Tete province of Mozambique. During this offensive against FRELIMO guerrillas, three Trojans were mobilised to support the Portuguese Brigade HQ at Estima Air Base, near the vital Cabora Bassa Dam. Rhodesia lost two Trojans during joint operations over Mozambican territory during 1974, both to Strela missiles: the first (R3244), piloted by Flight Lieutenant Chris Weinmann, on 14 April; and the second (R3427), piloted by Flight Lieutenant Willy Wilson and Flight Sergeant Roger Andrews, on 20 April.
