The first Lockheed P2V-5 Neptunes, purchased second-hand from the Royal Netherlands Navy, began arriving in Portugal in April 1960 to replace the Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon. These maritime patrol aircraft were assigned to Air Base No. 6 (BA6) in Montijo, and several saw service as bombers in Africa, especially Guinea. In 1973-74 the Portuguese government petitioned the US to replace the ageing Neptune with the P-3 Orion, but the April Revolution delayed the order and, as a result, Portugal’s P2V-5s remained in service until 1977.
