Bell UH-1Ms (an upgraded the Bell UH-1B, with a more powerful engine, protected by armour plating and exhaust diffuser) were nicknamed ‘Guardián’ in FAS service. This example – construction number 1764, US serial number 66-15036 – was delivered in September 1985 and received the FAS serial number 230. While serving with the Escuadrón de Helicópteros, it crashed on 12 March 1991. It is shown as armed with a pod for unguided rockets and a mini-gun calibre 7.62mm. The insert shows a similar, though slightly older installation of a similar nature with the red protective cover over the barrels of the mini gun. (Artwork by Luca Canossa)
