The FAS continued operating its surviving Aérospatiale SA.315B Lama helicopters through the 1980s. One of these, delivered in 1974, was construction number 2441: it received the serial FAS 11 and served with the Escuadrón de Helicópteros from the Ilopango AB. Although designed as light utility and liaison helicopters, Salvadorean Lamas were frequently deployed as ‘bombers’, usually armed with two Mk.82 bombs (calibre 250kg), or one M117 (calibre 375kg), or four bombs (calibre 70kg). This capability became available through the installation of bomb shackles from disused Cavalier F-51D Mustang piston-engined fighters. (Artwork by Luca Canossa)
