The 18 Type-85 (YW 309) IFVs acquired by the SLA all mounted a Chinese copy of the turret of the Soviet-made BMP-1 IFV, as shown here. This had a 73mm smooth bore, low-pressure gun (firing similar ammunition to the RPG-7) and a 7.62mm PKT machine gun. While classified as light tanks and designated ‘T-85’ by the Sri Lankans, they proved a disappointment in service: they were too lightly armoured, difficult to maintain and lacking technical documentation in English.
