After the Su-24, the Su-25 was the second ‘workhorse’ of the VKS in Syria. While the initial batch of 12 aircraft included earlier Su-25SMs (mostly Su-25SM-76s), by 2017 the most advanced Su-25SM-3s had also appeared at Hmeimim AB, two of which are illustrated here. The primary means of outside identification of this sub-variant are minimal changes in regards of the antenna configuration behind the cockpit: most of SM-3s identified so far have received an antenna related to the Metronome communications system. Another detail often reported as related to Su-25SM-3s is a small housing on the lower part of the front fuselage, and the appearance of L-370-3S ECM-pods (shown in inset, in lower right corner), always carried on the outermost underwing hardpoints (instead of pylons for R-60/AA-8 missiles). Their camouflage patterns consisted of beige (BS381C/388), green (FS24138) and brown (usually FS20111, but sometimes FS30045 or FS30219). (Artworks by Tom Cooper)
