The ‘MiG-21’ that intercepted the ROCAF U-2R on 29 April 1971 was most likely one of the J-7As of the 9th Naval Aviation Division of the PLANAF: this was the former 9th Fighter Division of the PLAAF, re-assigned to the North Sea Fleet of the PLAN, the 25th Air Regiment of which is known to have operated J-7s and been deployed in the Qingdao area as of the 1970s. The aircraft was left in ‘silver-grey’ overall, and – in addition to the prominent serial on the forward fuselage – wore the national insignia in six positions, including the ‘standard’ one, low on the fin. Armament consisted of two Chinese copies of the NR-30, and a pair of PL-2s. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
