With the loss of one RB-57A proving that further operations of that variant over mainland China would be suicidal, the CIA furnished three more advanced RB-57Ds to the 4th Squadron ROCAF. All were left in the livery already applied in the USA, consisting of matt white on top surfaces, and matt black on sides and undersurfaces. Like the RB-57As before them, they also received large Taiwanese national insignia on the rear fuselage and the top surface of the left wing, and their serials and the ROCAF registration in red. 4th Squadron’s RB-57Ds flew 15 successful missions over the PRC until the jet shown here (53-3978/5643) was shot down by S-75s of the 2nd Surface-to-Air Guided Missile Battalion, PLA, becoming the first ever to be shot down by SAMs. The pilot, Ying Chin Wong, was killed.
