The Yakovlev Yak-17UTI two-seat jet trainer was a follow-on development of the first Soviet jet fighter, the Yak-15. It lacked armament and featured a tricycle undercarriage, introduced in order to level the nose and provide better visibility for the student pilot in the front cockpit. The Bulgarian air arm took on strength 16 Yak-17UTIs, all of these being second-hand examples, with the first batch of five delivered in crated form in May 1951. The last aircraft were taken in 1955 and remained in active use until 1958. Despite its primitive design and the intense use for jet conversion and continuation training, the Yak-17UTI proved reliable enough in Bulgarian service, with only one aircraft lost, due to pilot error.
