A number of Yakovlev Yak-9Ds were included in the batch of 120 Yak-9 fighters taken on strength by the Bulgarian air arm in mid-1945. This is a longrange derivative of the well-known Yak-9 family, equipped with additional fuel tanks. The type remained in front-line service with the VVS until 1954, when the last survivors, serving with the 14th OIAP at Karlovo – Marino Pole, specialised in night operations, were retired. This aircraft wears the socalled OF-insignia, introduced by the Bulgarian air arm in 1945.
