The Ilyushin Il-10 attack aircraft was taken into service with the Bulgarian Air Force in 1951. Seventy-four combat aircraft and six trainers with dual controls were used to equip the headquarters flight and two attack regiments of the 5th ShAD, an attack division based at Plovdiv airfield. Its 17th ShAP, a component regiment, was based at Plovdiv, the 23rd ShAP at Krumovo and the 17th ShAP at Gorna Oryakhovitsa. In 1953, the VVS took delivery of 30 more Il-10s, this time made in Czechoslovakia, which replaced the last Il-2m3s serving with the three squadrons of the 20th ShAP at Krumovo. The last Il-10s remained in active service with the Bulgarian air arm until 1958.
