The two primary anti-ship missiles deployed by the Soviet SSGs and SSGNs of the first and second generation were the P-6 (left) and P-70 Ametist (right). Both were massive weapons, capable of delivering a tremendous punch. However, while the former emphasised range, the second depended on speed and the moment of surprise for its effectiveness. The P-6 could be launched from the surface only; the P-70 enabled the boats of the Project 670 and 670M classes to engage enemy warships from under the surface. (Artworks by Tom Cooper)
