The Project 651 class (ASCC/NATO codename ‘Juliett’) was a diesel-electric-powered SSG, of which 16 were constructed between 1960 and 1968. They displaced 3,225 tons surfaced and 4,203 tons submerged, were powered by two 4,000hp diesel engines and could reach a maximum speed of 16.8 knots surfaced or 18 knots submerged. Their original armament included four P-6 missiles (these were replaced by P-500s and P-750s), six 533mm torpedo tubes forward and four 406mm tubes aft. The Julietts were assigned as follows: K-124, K-77 and K-81 to the Baltic Fleet; K-58, K-67 and K-318 to the Black Sea Fleet; K-63, K-73, K-120 and K-270 to the Pacific Fleet; and the rest to the Northern Fleet. Submarines of the Project 651-class undertook a total of 61 patrols, of which 35 were in the Mediterranean: the class proved more effective when deployed in shallow and enclosed waters than did nuclear-powered SSGNs.
