The Mil Mi-4 was the first Soviet medium lift helicopter. Once it entered service in substantial numbers it gave the Soviets the ability to mount large-scale operations such as inserting troops behind enemy lines, or rapidly exploit the results of a nuclear strike by means of a heliborne landing. While the Mi-4 could not transport even light armour such as the ASU-57 self-propelled guns, it could carry jeep-sized vehicles, anti-tank guns and mortars, meaning the troops it deployed could receive light fire support. The helicopter’s ability to carry personnel, equipment and vehicles was also very useful when performing auxiliary tasks in support of nuclear testing. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
