The standard main battle tank of the Soviet, Polish, Hungarian, Bulgarian and East German armies of the 1960s was the T-54/55 family, of which there were at least seven major production variants, some of which were manufactured in Poland and Czechoslovakia. By 1968, many were upgraded through the addition of infra-red searchlights to the right of their 100mm D-10T main gun. This example was operated by one of the Soviet Army’s tank formations deployed to secure downtown Prague on 21 August 1968. While painted in dark olive green overall, it received white identification stripes down the front hull and turret sides, in addition to an entire set of turret markings. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
