The BRDM-1 was the standard amphibious armoured scout car of most of the WTO’s mechanised formations in the 1960s. At least 10,000 were manufactured from 1957 to 1966, and they served in company-sized detachment assigned to the reconnaissance battalion of every division, with the task of reconnaissance and screening. Visible at the bottom of the chassis, between main wheels, are additional chain-driven belly wheels, lowered by the driver to allow trench crossing. Standard armament included one 7.62mm medium machine gun, but up to three of these could be installed. As usual for the 1960s, all were painted in dark olive green overall: vehicles deployed during Operation Danube all wore white vertical identification stripes in addition to their turret numbers.
