The Ratel infantry combat vehicle was custom-designed for conventional operations under South African conditions. As such, it became a relatively large, tall, lightly armoured, but highly mobile vehicle capable of carrying a crew of three and eight fully armed and equipped troops even through the thickest bush. The Ratel 20, shown here, featured the dual-fed F2 20mm automatic cannon (a licenced French GIAT gun), and three Browning 7.62mm machine guns (one coaxial). During the campaigns of 1987-1988, most of the Ratel 20s were assigned to the 61st Mechanised Battalion. As usual for the SADF, all the vehicles were painted in mid-stone overall, and wore large alpha numeric insignia in white, usually applied on the superstructure or side-doors.
