The Toyota Land Cruiser HJ47 light utility truck of the 1970s remains the primary combat vehicle of the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army (SPLA; often abbreviated as ELPS from the Ejército de Liberación Saharaui). Powered by a 3.6-litre or 4.0-litre inline six-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 95 horse powers, they have proven highly reliable, rugged vehicles, with an excellent range. Nearly all have their hardtop/driver cab removed, and most now mount ZU-23-2 twin 23mm anti-aircraft autocannons, as illustrated here. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
