McDonnell XP-67 "Bat" ("Moonbat") |
A variety of changes, major and minor, were made to the XP-67 between its roll-out and final flight. Most of its flight testing,
between March and late summer 1944, was done in this configuration. During that time, details changed. For example, the air
scoops on the right engine nacelle were modified slightly in contour from the corresponding ones on the left nacelle, and for
unknown reasons seem to have never been painted. Various forms of the white striping on the fuselage nose and tail are recorded
in photographs of the period, as are remnants of the yellow striping on the wings. A small glass aperture appeared at the tip of the
nose cone. In late summer 1944, most of the cooling vents and scoops that had been added were removed to reduce drag in
preparation for the upcoming all-important high-speed demonstration flights, but very few flights were accomplished in that
configuration.
