Krupp commenced production of its 88mm FlaK 18 in January 1933, the weapon being derived from its 8.8cm FlaK 16 gun of World War I. The ingenious semi‑automatic loading system resulted in an excellent rate of fire of 15-20 rounds per minute. The 88mm FlaK series of guns (18, 36 and 37) were the mainstay of the Flakwaffe, and by August 1944 close to 11,000 were in service across Germany and occupied Europe.
