The first McDonnell XF-88 was based on a requirement for a long-range, twinengined fighter jet with swept wings, issued by the USAAF in 1946. The first XF- 88 was powered by non-afterburning J34-13 engines – which doomed it to remain underpowered, although flight testing showed adequate handling and the required endurance. The first prototype was subsequently equipped with an Allison XT-35-A-5 turboprop for testing purposes: as the XF-88B, it became the first propeller-powered aircraft to break the sound barrier.
