The Curtiss-Wright XP-87 Blackhawk was designed as an all-weather jet-powered interceptor. Powered by a total of four ill-fated Westinghouse XJ34 turbojets (which were to spoil a number of US fighter projects), it was first flown on 5 March 1948, but promptly proved slower than expected, even if ‘otherwise acceptable’. The USAF placed an order for 57 F-87A interceptors and 30 RF-87A reconnaissance fighters but before the J34s could be replaced by General Electric J47s, lost interest due to the appearance of the Northrop F-89 and cancelled the project on 10 October 1948.
