The North American P-82 Twin Mustang was the last US-made piston-engined fighter to enter series production. Based on the design of the P-51, it was originally envisaged as a long-range escort fighter for Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers. The war ended before it became operational, and subsequently it entered service as a replacement for the Northrop P-61 Black Widow, as an allweather and night interceptor. This P-82G (serial number 46-357) was flown by captains Ralph D. Mulhollen and Arild C Nielsen, from the 68th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 6160th Air Bases Wing, from Itazuke in Japan, as of June 1950. (Artwork by Jean-Marie Guillou)
