During 2023, with help from the Ministry of Defence in Moscow, the Wagner Group began replacing its ‘do-it-yourself’ armoured vehicles with better types, including BTR-82As, one of which is shown here. A further development of the BTR-80 and -80A (in turn improved from the older and relatively unsuccessful BTR-70 armoured personnel carrier), this 8-wheeled vehicle first seen in the mid-1990s received a new single engine, improved armour, spall liners, a GLONASS navigation system and a turret with the 30mm 2A72 autocannon and TKN-4GA-02 nightvision device. The Wagner Group also received a few 2S23 Nona-SVK self-propelled 120mm mortars mounted on the same chassis, and both remained in service and were seen in numbers during the mutiny of 24 June 2023.
