While exported by the USA to Iraq for agricultural purposes, 30 Hughes (later McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems) MD 500D helicopters were all taken up by the Iraqi Army Aviation Corps and saw intensive combat service during the last three years of the war with Iran. As far as is known, most were painted in yellow sand overall, although some did receive a more complex, three-colour camouflage pattern reminiscent of that applied on many Iraqi Mi-17s. Armament confirmed as deployed by IrAAC MD 500Ds included FN ENTA TMP-5 pods for twin 7.62mm machine guns (shown here), 12-tube FZ launchers for unguided 2.75in rockets and Brandt 22x68 launchers for 22 68mm unguided rockets.
