About 1,300 T-62s formed the primary armament of Iraqi armoured divisions at the start of the war. The type proved not only cramped, but also very vulnerable to any kind of combat damage (even a glancing hit on the front hull could cause internally stored ammunition to detonate), and rapidly overheated the crew during any kind of engagement. Most of the Iraqi T-62s were painted in a standardised camouflage pattern consisting of yellow sand, with wide stripes of blue-green applied down their sides. Identifcation insignia (in this case a square of orange, with a vertical blue line) were usually applied on the turret sides (next to the turret number, ‘127’ in this case) and often also on the fume extractor.
