Schwdabisch Hall, Germany, August 1944 Wr Nr. 550077, flown by Hauptman Stolle, was one of a number of He 177s dispatched to attack Allied targets in Normandy on the night of 14 August 1944. Near Barfleur a Northrop P-61A Black Widow of the 422nd NFS named ‘Impatient Widow’ manoeuvred for an attack, but the Heinkel’s tail-gunner, Uffz. Fabinger, got off the first shots. The badly damaged P-61 limped back to base for a landing where the nose gear collapsed, but the crew were uninjured.
